Just behind Amalienborg Slot is one of the most stunning domes I have ever seen.
Marmorkirken, or the Marble Church, is technically called Frederiks Kirke (Frederik’s Church).
They began building Marmorkirken in 1749 to commemorate the 300 year anniversary of the Royal Family. King Frederick V of Denmark had intended for this glorious church to be made entirely of marble.
Sadly, the funding was slashed in 1770 and it lay unfinished for 150 years. It was finally finished in 1894. The marble was almost entirely swapped for limestone.
Marmorkirken has the largest dome in Scandinavia with a span of 31 meters.
Have you been to Marmorkirken?
