One of the wonderful things about Christmas in Europe is the Christmas Markets that pop up in nearly every city. Originally a German tradition, the UK has gladly picked up the tradition and Glasgow does it so well.
The highlights for us this year were the German Bratwurst guys and the Dutch pancakes.
As you might remember from our trip to Vienna, Rambo simply cannot say no to currywurst.
I went for the slightly less traditional krakauer, which is a really long, spiced sausage. With a tiny roll, of course!
Rambo’s sister was recently raving about the Dutch pancakes (also known as poffertjes) at the market, so we were basically obligated to get some.
I’m pretty sure that they are the best pancakes in the history of pancakes. As a southerner, I grew up on good old-fashioned buttermilk pancakes. As a student of French, I fell in love with crêpes with Nutella. But these little babies are on a whole other level.
For starters, they are wee pancakes! Who doesn’t like things that are wee?
Secondly, they give you two toppings on your wee pancakes to enjoy them even more!
I think I’m in love, y’all. I don’t know what I’m going to do when the Christmas Market shuts and I can’t get them anymore. Rambo says I’m not allowed one of the massive cast iron grills they cook them in.
Have you been to a Christmas Market this season? Have you ever tried these delicious pancakes (poffertjes)?
