Eilean Donan is an island castle in the Highlands of Scotland near the village of Dornie where Loch Duich, Loch Long and Loch Alsh meet. Eilean Donnain is Gaelic for Island of Donnán. And this history of this island castle is full of rebellion against the English and the family (Clan Macrae) who lived there. Eilean Donan is the most photographed castle in Scotland, and it’s pretty easy to see why. Also, it’s the castle from the wedding in the film Made of Honor, along with a slew of other movies and TV shows.
The entry fee for the castle is £6.50 (about $10). We had a guided tour which was set up by the bus driver when he bought the tickets, so I assume the ticket price includes a guide. Eilean Donan was surprisingly small, but it was so gorgeous. When Rambo and I drove by a few months later on our road trip to Skye, I asked if we could pop in for another tour. If you’re curious, we didn’t. Just stared at it as we drove by.
Important note, Eilean Donan is closed for the month of January, so be aware of when you book your trip if you want to go inside the castle.
