For our first lunch in Memphis, Rambo insisted on going to “the chicken shop from the telly”. After some investigation, he told me it was Gus’s World Famous Fried Chicken. I’m still not sure what show he saw this chicken shop on over in Scotland. As a frequent traveller, I have a healthy suspicion of anywhere claiming to be the best or most famous or anything of that nature. Especially if I’ve never heard of it before. I find it hard to believe that someplace is world famous, and yet I’ve never heard of it even though I’m just a few hours away. Gus’s was a pleasant surprise. Their menu is quite short, you can have light, dark, or tenders. They also give you cool cups to take home. From the outside, this place doesn’t look like much, and honestly there isn’t all that much seating inside. It’s a pretty small joint.
|I hate chicken with bones in it, so I opted for the tenders.|
They were quite good. Also, there is a piece of toast hiding underneath the chicken.
|Rambo opted for the 3 piece dark.|
He said the breading was quite spicy and had really great flavor.
Overall, I would recommend Gus’s if there is one where you are going. I’m not sure I’d go so far as to say it is something to go to Memphis for specifically. Their website says that they are expanding to Arkansas and Texas soon too.
